Dealing with Tooth Sensitivity

What are sensitive teeth?

Dental sensitivity is a condition that occurs when there is exposure of the dentin surface, a more inner layer of the teeth that is protected from the action of external factors by the tooth enamel. When this protective structure is disturbed, the dentine becomes exposed, causing the symptoms of discomfort and pain.

As mentioned before, the most common symptom of sensitive teeth is an uncomfortable and sometimes painful sensation when consuming certain foods or drinks. In some cases, the simple act of breathing in cold air can lead to tooth sensitivity.

What are the main causes of sensitive teeth?

There are several possible causes of sensitive teeth. The main one is the excessive consumption of acidic foods and beverages, bruxism or a very strong and abrasive brushing.

The presence of other diseases, such as bulimia and gastroesophageal reflux, can also lead to the condition. Other causes include: presence of cavities, periodontal diseases, gum disease and fractured teeth.

How to treat and prevent the onset of tooth sensitivity?

1. Choose a suitable brush

Very hard bristles can cause a strong and abrasive cleaning, leading to tooth wear that causes sensitivity. It is fundamental to opt for softer brushes and follow the recommendations of the dental hygienist.

2. Be mindful of toothpaste selection

Many toothpastes that claim to be whitening are very abrasive and can exacerbate this problem.

3. Avoid the consumption of acidic foods and drinks

Acidic foods and beverages can lead to the onset or worsening of the condition. Moderate consumption is an excellent way to prevent tooth erosion and reduce its effects.

4. Get help from a dentist

Only a dentist can identify the causes for the appearance of sensitive teeth and the main treatment, which may include the resolution of other issues related to the problem, as in cases of gingival retraction and periodontal diseases.

It’s also very important to maintain a periodic follow-up with your dentist to avoid the return of the problem.
